PARKS AND TRIBES

SAN CRISTOBAL, GALAPAGOS, ECUADOR, DAY TRIP

Our 6 - 7 days Island hopping tour at an incredible price visits the following islands:

TOURS GALAPAGOS ISLANDS & CRUISE DEALS [2024]: Male Great Frigate Bird with expandes throat at Galapagos National Park TOURS GALAPAGOS ISLANDS & CRUISE DEALS [2024]: Galapagos Lava Tunnel BARTOLOME GALAPAGOS DAY TRIP: Bartelome Island at Galapagos National Park
San Cristobal Santa Cruz Bartolome Isabela

San Cristobal, Galapagos, Ecuador is one of two airport entries into Galapagos and we use it so you can see visit the best visitor center of Galapagos National Park as well as an opportunity to judge for yourself that you have not missed out on anything as you briefly stay on its shores. In my opinion, San Cristobal is NOT the greatest island of Galapagos and you will visit it just for a few hours between landing at the airport and boarding the 2 hours ferry to Santa Cruz.

San Cristobal Airport

San Cristobal Airport is at a mere 5 minutes from the only town on the island, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno. There are daily flights from Quito and Guayaquil.

Visitor Center San Cristobal

The visitor center at San Cristobal is by far the best of Galapagos, combining a very good visitor center with the best trail on the island. Your transport will pick you up at airport and bring you directly to the visitor center, which is just 5 minutes from the airport.

The visitor center of Can Cristobal is the best of Galapagos.

The visitor center has several pavilions as well as an interpretative garden.

Visitor Center Trail

There is a trail from the visitor center along the coast, which will give an impression of the vegetation and some of the animals. However, on our standard trip, there is no time to walk the trail, as it takes at least 2 hours to complete. Only in combination with a day trip to Espanola Island, does it make sense to walk the trail, as one has to wait until the next day to take the Espanola Day Trip. In that case, it would be a wonderful opportunity to walk the trail at a relaxed pace and spend some time on one of the beaches.

A fantastic trail built from lava stone.

The trail leading to Las Tijeritas overlook.

One of the more popular beaches.

Some tourists like the privacy of a coastal shrub.

Playa Punta Carola

The first stop along the trail is a nice beach, Punta Carola.

Teenagers at a lookout along the trail.

Smile!!!.

Muello Las Tijeritas and Tijeritas Beach

The second main beach and a floating platform for swimming and snorkeling is Muellos Las Tijeritas and a bit further the Las Tijeritas Beach. It has some nice snorkeling, but one would have to bring one's own mask and fins as we are not equipped to facilitate those.

Muello Las Tijeritas is a popular place for swimming and snorkeling.

Sea Lions love flat level places and you may find them anywhere on trails, benches and even roads.

Las Tijeritas Frigate Bird Nesting Colony

During the mating season from March to May, one has the chance to see the frigate birds on their nests at the La Tijeritas Frigate Bird Nesting colony at Cerro Tijeritas. The males will show off with their red pouches pumped up.

There are five species in the single genus Fregata of which the Magnificent Frigate Bird, Fregata magnificens and Great Frigate Bird, Fregata minor, roam  the skies of the Galapagos Islands as well as breed there in several colonies, particularly on Tower Island. They have long wings, tails and bills and the males have a red gular pouch that is inflated during the breeding season to attract a mate. They are pelagic piscivores (fish eaters) which obtain most of their food by chasing other birds until they throw up the fish they caught.

La Loberia Beach

La Lobería is the best known Sea Lion colony on Galapagos, but not really the cutest. Moreover it takes at least 20 minutes to walk there at a stiff pace and another 20 minutes back. I was surprised to see that La Lobería does not have as big a herd as one would expect: Just about 60 to 100 animas, of which maybe half or less are actually on the shore during any time of the day.

La Lobería is one of the best known Sea Lion herds at about half an hour from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno.

Puerto Baquerizo Moreno

The good thing is that there is far cuter place to see just as many Sea Lions right on the town beach, where we take you on the excursion, right after visiting the visitor center.

Playa del Oro

Just a few minutes further is Playa del Oro where one can also see Sea Lions, but less than on Puerto Baquerizo Morento beach.

Punta Pitt

This is the only place on Galapagos where one may see all three species of boobies: blue-footed boobies, red-footed boobies and Nazca boobies. We mention this, because all the guides talk about it, but it would take an extra day to visit, for which there is no time.
