BARTELOME GALAPAGOS ISLAND

Bartolomé is a barren islet in Sullivan Bay to the east of Santiago Island.

Bartolomé is the most visited and most photographed island in Galapagos. Visitors have access to two sites: one that involves a climb to an incredible viewpoint and the other at the beach where you go snorkeling to admire the incredible marine life in crystal clear water and swimming.

BARTOLOME GALAPAGOS DAY TRIP: Bartelome Island at Galapagos National Park

The most iconic view of the Galapagos Islands is the view from the Bartolome volcano summit over the island.

the Pinnacle Rock from the top of the volcano on Bartolome Island.

BARTOLOME VOLCANO

Bartolome Volcanos

Bartolome consist of a big and small volcano, interconnected by a coral sand bank with bright white sand beaches. A black Pahoehoe lava stream plateau along the shore of the smaller volcano offers a fantastic opportunity to see Pahoehoe lava, while the tall volcano mostly consists of AA lava, which you can observe on its climb to the top where you have a incredible view over the island.

Bartelome Lava

There are two types of lava:

  1. AA lava, a very light dark orange and very rough porous lava, often used for gardening;
  2. Pahoehoe lava, a black, shiny lava often found in big lava streams,

which are both present at Barolome Island.

A female Lava Lizard is recognized from the orange throat.

A Lava Heron with a fish. They can be seen all along the water line, praying on orange crabs and small fish.

The Galapagos Penguins,  worldwide, the second smallest penguin species, are present in a small breeding colony at the foot of Pinnacle Rock. In 1982, the population of these birds almost went extinct during El Niño when the overall population went down from 15,000 to less than 500 birds and it will take years to fully recover.

BARTOLOME GALAPAGOS DAY TRIP: Female Sally Lightfoot Crab.BARTOLOME GALAPAGOS DAY TRIP: Male Sally Lightfoot Crab

The "Sally Lightfoot Crab" or in Spanish "Abuete Negro", Percnon gibbesi, is the bright orange crab at the Galapagos Islands. Female crabs are brighter orange.

The male "Sally Lightfoot Crab" has a deeper red color.

The "Sally Lightfoot Crab" or in Spanish "Abuete Negro", Percnon gibbesi, is common at Galapagos and lives at both sides of the Atlantic Ocean as well. It is one of the many charismatic species that inhabits the Galapagos Islands and occurring in great numbers along the water line, Including Bartelome.  They are a charming colorful attraction to all the visitors of the islands and a thankful object for photographers.

Bartelome Pinnacle Rock

One of the most distinctive and recognizable sites of the Galapagos islands is the Pinnacle Rock. Pinnacle Rock at Bartelome Island, It is a volcanic monolith, made of basalt when magma was expelled from an underwater volcano. As the sea cooled the hot lava, which then exploded, which then created this huge rock made up of many thin layers of basalt. You can snorkel around the rock where the sea is usually very quiet and the water is teaming with marine creatures, like green turtles, Galapagos Penguins and Sea Lions frolicking around you as well as the most brilliantly colored tropical fishes.

BARTOLOME GALAPAGOS DAY TRIP

Upon arrival, you will be taken in a dinghy onto a fascinating lava field where your guide will explain the different volcanic phenomena and lava forms. You will also see the bright orange "Red Rock Crabs" and the lava lizards with their orange throats.

When you board the dinghy again, you will be taken to a stairway landing in a small blue bay, opposite Pinnacle Rock. A wooden staircase trail will take you on a 600-m climb to the 114-m high summit When I climbed the summit in 1975, the staircase did not exist yet and we walked across the lava ashes to the top. About 15 years ago, the Park Service built this trail to avoid erosion. From the top you have a spectacular view over the island, the Pinnacle Rock, and the beaches at the bay.

After returning from the highest point of the island, the dinghy takes you to the foot of Pinnacle Rock to first watch the Penguins and afterward to go snorkeling around Pinnacle Rock until you reach the beautiful blond beach made of coral sand.

We can't promise which yacht we will be able to use for our Bartelome daytrip, as it depends on availability when all the bookings are in. But it will always be a decent yacht with a quality excursion.
